Ashtanga Yoga classes at home

Ashtanga Yoga, a dynamic and fluid practice, is distinguished by its sequences of postures synchronized with the breath. Developed by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois in the 20th century, it draws on the ancient traditions of yoga described in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. The term "Ashtanga" literally means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit, referring to the eight aspects of yoga that encompass ethical principles, personal discipline, postures (asanas), breath control (pranayama), concentration, meditation and contemplation.

FAQ

What is Ashtanga Yoga?

In Ashtanga Yoga, postures are linked together in a fluid and repetitive manner, creating a continuous flow that promotes not only strength and flexibility, but also a deep connection between body and mind. This holistic approach allows practitioners to eliminate physical and mental impurities, while developing a heightened self-awareness. By incorporating Ujjayi breathing, a controlled and sonic breath, each session becomes a true meditation in movement, thus offering a path to personal and spiritual fulfillment.

Origins and philosophy

Ashtanga Yoga, a dynamic and structured practice, has its origins in the ancient teachings of the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, a foundational yoga text dating from around the 2nd century BCE. The term "Ashtanga" literally means "eight limbs" in Sanskrit, referring to the eight stages of yoga that include ethical principles (yama), personal disciplines (niyama), postures (asana), breath control (pranayama), withdrawal of the senses (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana), and the state of oneness (samadhi).

Main features

Synchronization of movement and breathing: Each posture is linked to a breathing cycle, which creates a harmonious rhythm. This breathing technique, called Ujjayi, involves a slight contraction of the throat, producing a soothing sound that helps maintain concentration.

Tristana: Ashtanga is based on three fundamental elements: breathing (pranayama), gaze (drishti) and energy locks (bandhas). These elements help to channel energy and promote a meditative practice.

Dynamic practice: Ashtanga style is physically demanding, strengthening muscles and improving flexibility. The fluid, continuous movements also promote an increase in body temperature, facilitating detoxification through sweating.

Balance between strength and flexibility: This practice develops both muscular strength and flexibility, contributing to a balanced and functional body.

Course of a typical session

Opening: The session typically begins with a chant of the mantra “Om” or the Adi Mantra, “Ong Namo Guru Dev Namo,” to set an intention and connect to the yoga tradition.

Sun Salutations: The practice begins with sun salutations (Surya Namaskara A and B), which serve to warm up the body and prepare the muscles for the postures to come. These sequences are performed in a fluid manner, synchronized with the breathing.

Standing Postures: After the greetings, the session continues with a series of standing postures (asanas) that include balances, stretches, and twists. These postures strengthen the body and improve concentration.

Seated poses: The practice then moves to seated poses, often interspersed with vinyasa (flowing movements connecting the poses). These asanas aim to deepen the stretch and work on flexibility.

Final Relaxation: The session ends with Savasana, the corpse pose, where practitioners lie down to integrate the benefits of the practice. This moment of relaxation is essential to soothe the body and mind.

Mental and emotional benefits

Stress and Anxiety Reduction: The dynamic, rhythmic practice of Ashtanga Yoga helps calm the nervous system, reducing stress and anxiety levels.

Emotional Balance: Regular practice promotes better emotional balance by helping to manage emotions more effectively.

Mental Clarity: By calming mental turmoil, Ashtanga Yoga helps improve clarity of mind. This helps one make more informed decisions and develop a better understanding of oneself.

Building Self-Confidence: Progressive mastery of postures builds self-confidence. By overcoming physical challenges, practitioners learn to trust themselves, which can translate into improved self-esteem in other areas of their lives.

Physical benefits

Muscle Strengthening: Ashtanga sequences involve a series of postures that work all muscle groups, helping to develop overall, balanced strength. Each posture is designed to engage the muscles intensively, helping to tone the body

Improved flexibility: Regular practice of asanas promotes flexibility in muscles and joints. The fluid movements and deep stretches help improve flexibility, which can reduce the risk of injury and improve mobility.

Stamina Development: The dynamic nature of Ashtanga Yoga requires a certain amount of physical stamina. Regular practice increases the body's overall endurance and stamina, allowing practitioners to engage in physical activities with more energy.
